DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF WOODEN DECKS
Sitting out on a timber deck, sipping a glass of Cape red, watching one of our magnificent sun sets, what a romantic thought. Turn it into reality by requesting a couple of Dial A Contractor’s accredited decking service providers to come and give you some design ideas. A wooden deck is an aesthetic delight, and will convert a drab garden or entertainment area into the most popular hang out spot imaginable.

There are various hardwoods that can be utilized for outside decks, Ash, Teak, Mahogany, Balau to name but a few, the latter being the most popular choice because of cost and availability. The best suggestion is to get advice from the experts, we recommend two to three quotes before you decide on the final design, or who to award the construction of your wooden decking project to.

TIMBER SUNDECKS

We can use all types of timber to build your deck. When selecting which timber to use, its important to consider the following:

Traffic
Once completed, your deck will be subjected to varying degrees of people traffic. For low to medium-traffic areas, its important to use softer timbers like Pine or Saligna. For high-traffic areas, a more durable timber like Teak or Balau should be used.

Colour
Just like traffic, your new sundeck will be exposed to various degrees of sunlight which can be very damaging to unvarnished wood. Darker timbers like African Mahogany or Black & Tan Kiaat can be difficult to stain and, because of their dark colours, can generate excessive heat, especially on a hot summers day.

Aesthetics
As with any sundeck, the choices of which timber to choose depends on you. It is advisable, however, to choose timbers that match the colour schemes of your garden, depending on where your sundeck will be installed.

TIMBER DECKING OPTIONS

Depending on your preferences, different types of wood can be used. It is important, however, to consider the options listed below:

Traffic
Using softer timbers like treated Pine and Maculata are better options for areas with low to medium-traffic. For areas that are regularly frequented, a harder variety of timbers are needed. Timbers like Rhinowood and Massaranduba are ideal for high-traffic areas.

Colour
Choosing the correct colour largely depend on your preferences. Darker timbers can prove difficult to varnish and, as mentioned above, dark colours tend to accumulate more heat. We have, however, many varieties of hardwoods to choose from and can readily build a deck out of whatever timber you wish to use.

Aesthetics
This option largely depends on the decor of your home. Choosing a timber with the same colour esthetics greatly enhances the beauty of your deck. Gum poles, which are used as supports, can also contribute greatly to aesthetic value.

TIMBER DECKS MAINTENANCE

Decking is typically treated with penetrative oils or some form of sealer. The treatment/maintenance/re-treatment for oiled and sealed decks are considerably different, so please make sure you know what treatment is currently on your deck.

We encourage you to think of your deck as beautiful wooden furniture - which it is. If you have ever had Teak or other wooden furniture which you use outside and is exposed to the elements, you will know how important it is to oil the furniture regularly in order to keep it looking as beautiful as that day you purchased it. Your deck is no different.

So - the basics: Keep the deck clean. This means two things - firstly, make sure you keep your deck clear of leaves and other organic materials especially those which build up between the planks. This organic matter will hold moisture and invite rot. Secondly, wash your deck regularly (weekly - as you wash the floors in your home) with DeckWash - assuming you have elected a penetrative oil treatment for your deck. This product is specifically designed to be used with the treatments employed by your contractor in the preparation of your timber. DeckWash will clean and sanitise your deck while feeding the timber with waxes. Regular use of DeckWash will prolong the time between re-oiling of your deck.

Re-oiling: Consult your installer as the which product was employed in the treatment of your timbers. It is recommended that you use the same product when re-treating your deck. As a rule of thumb - the harder the wood, the more often treatment will be required. This is because the oils penetrate hard timbers only slightly, where as more porous timbers absorb more of the treatment. Re-oiling should be done whenever your deck begins to look dry and/or faded. On soft timbers, use a brush and apply a generous layer of oil. On hard timber, simply moisten a piece of mutton cloth with the oil and wipe a thin layer of oil on the deck, or apply with a brush and work the oil into a thin layer. Whatever oil you apply should be absorbed within a few hours in the sun - or you have applied too much. Do not treat your deck when rain is imminent.

After re-applying oils, continue the following week with your Deckwash maintenance as before.
